This is the advice the boy received from the old king whom he encountered while pondering whether or not to take his dream seriously. Should the boy leave everything he has known as a shepherd and go to the distant lands of Egypt and find his treasure? In his mind, the boy had already succeeded in life by not complying with his father’s expectation for him to become a priest, and by having traveled and far and afield as a shepherd.

 

The Alchemist is a story about a boy’s personal, yet universal, journey to pay attention to and follow the omens leading toward one’s Personal Legend. Along the way, the boy is tested for his determination, courage and wisdom as thieves, bandits, and the shadow of death awaited him. What will the boy learn about himself and the world as he pursues his Personal Legend? What of love and the soul of the world will be revealed to him?​

 

Together, we will read The Alchemist, a classic from Paulo Coelho, in the month of September. Join the Cozy Book Club and meet on Sunday afternoons (in person, in Brussels) or evening (online) to discuss the ideas and questions The Alchemist inspires.
